Emulsion vapour detection on an aluminium rolling mill
A mixture of water and an oil-like rolling additive is used for lubrication and cooling on a hot rolling mill for aluminium sheets. This mixture is sprayed onto the aluminium sheet, which is heated to approx. 500°C, during the rolling process. This process, known as "quenching", treats the surface of the sheet and prevents oxidation. At the same time, a large amount of oil-containing vapour is produced.
To ensure safe and efficient production, a collection system with four extraction hoods was installed. The extraction concept was developed and optimised using CFD simulation.
The captured air volume of 160,000 m³/h is cleaned via two water/oil separators using the demister principle and then discharged into the open air.
Result: Ensuring effective emulsion vapour collection to improve air quality, protect plant technology and comply with environmental and occupational safety requirements.
