Staying healthy and safe on the job

Venti Oelde organised an informative and beneficial Health Day for its employees. The Health Day was an opportunity to expand our shared knowledge about occupational safety topics and to get practical tips about work safety. We received support for this event from partners such as AOK NordWest, Berufsgenossenschaft Holz und Metall, Werkarztzentrum Oelde e. V., prosund GmbH & Co. KG, PIEL Die Technische Großhandlung GmbH, and SC Johnson Professional GmbH.

Our employees could visit many different stands at the event, receiving valuable information on topics such as heart-healthy nutrition and back pain prevention and having their blood pressure and blood glucose levels checked. The proper protective gear to be worn at the workplace was also a central topic. Work shoe experts from “ELTEN” were on hand to take exact foot measurements and individual foot data sheets were prepared. Healthy skin was also in focus, with moisture and elasticity checks for employees and the chance to test various products and receive skin care tips.

A fire simulator provided exciting and instructive entertainment for employees at a stand where they had the chance to practice their fire extinguishing capabilities for a possible emergency situation.

The Venti Oelde Health Day strengthened our employees’ awareness of occupational safety issues while also giving practical tips for general health questions. Many thanks to everyone involved for their participation and support.

At Venti Oelde, the safety and well-being of all employees is a top priority every day.

Increasing profitability & strengthening environmental protection

Venti Oelde delivers downstream system for the S. Norton Group’s major new shredding plant.

The S. Norton Group has recently invested £20 million in a new world-class metals shredder facility at its site in Manchester, England. Venti Oelde supplied the downstream processing technology for the new high-performance 3000 hp shredder unit.

Our innovative solution, which includes a combination of circular filter and coarse materials separator, allows for a low-dust separating process – even with difficult starting materials such as waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). In addition, we have equipped the downstream fans with frequency converters. These make use of the optimal operating points and are therefore especially energy efficient. In addition to significantly expanding existing capacity, S. Norton’s new facility will also achieve a much greater throughput of quality ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals.

The S. Norton Group collects, processes and sells approximately 1.5 million tons of recyclable materials each year. It strives to keep all waste out of landfills.

We are proud to be a part of this pioneering project and look forward to further successful undertakings that make a positive contribution to improved protection of the environment.

An exciting excursion at the start of the apprenticeship

Six promising young people started their training at Venti Oelde on August 1 of this year in the occupational fields of technical product designer, plant mechanic and industrial clerk.

To help the new apprentices get started and to develop their team spirit, they went on an interesting excursion to the Venti subsidiary Spänex GmbH in Uslar, Germany, together with the trainees of the other apprenticeship years.

At Spänex, the apprentices and their training coordinators received a comprehensive overview of the company's production processes and product portfolio. With individual tours corresponding to their respective occupational fields, the three groups of apprentices had the chance to delve deeper into different subject areas and get new perspectives on the working process. A question-and-answer session with the Spänex management after the tours provided further interesting insights into the company.

Of course, the highpoint of the day came with the exchange between the apprentices of the two companies Spänex and Venti Oelde, where they were able to share their experiences to date and make new contacts. All in all, it was an interesting and enriching day for all concerned.

Venti Oelde extends a warm welcome to the new apprentices and wishes them good luck and lots of success during their training at the company.

Venti_Wildblumenwiese.jpg
Green goes multi-colored

With the support of NABU-Naturstation Münsterland, Venti Oelde has transformed a former lawn area next to the company headquarters into a vibrant wildflower haven.

Instead of closely trimmed blades, the area next to the Venti Oelde headquarters now boasts an impressive variety of wildflower species and wild grasses. This colorful spectacle is not only aesthetically pleasing but also provides a valuable habitat for numerous insect species. Alongside bees, different species of butterflies and beetles have now found a new home, with all playing a crucial role in plant pollination and maintenance of the ecological balance. In light of the ongoing decline in insect populations and its associated ecological effects, the creation of this wildflower landscape represents a conscious step toward nature conservation and the promotion of biodiversity.

And the positive effects of this natural landscape extend beyond the realm of insect life. The area now also offers a source of food and refuge for other animal species, such as birds and small mammals. In addition to its ecological benefits, the blooming wildflower landscape enhances the overall surroundings, making a small contribution to preserving nature in urban spaces.

A successful handover

For more than three decades Winfried Koch took care of business for Venti Oelde, serving our partners in the steel and metal-processing industries. Over all this time, he always had a convincing fan solution to offer to each of our customers. Now Winfried Koch has put these duties behind himself and moved on to his retirement. We wish him the very best for this new phase of life.

In the final period of his Venti service, Winfried Koch passed the responsibility for the company’s steel and metal-processing customers on to his colleague Dipl.-Ing. Sergej Woltschenko. Sergej Woltschenko has been a member of the Venti Oelde team for ten years and has a wealth of experience in fans for the steel and metal-processing sector. After the successful transition, Mr. Woltschenko has now taken up where Mr. Koch left off, with lots of motivation and high expectations to handle future projects together with Venti customers.

A pit stop after 20 years

In 2003, Venti Oelde delivered a high-performance centrifugal fan for use in a coal mill to a steelworks. Today after nearly 20 years later, the fan came back to our factory for a first modernization pit stop.

An initial inspection only showed some worn areas on the impeller blades. To get a more detailed look, the impeller with the mounted shaft was dismantled together with the block bearing and the attached coupling half. This revealed that the shaft had taken a blow and been damaged at some point in the past, so that it would need to be replaced together with the rolling bearings, feather keys and shaft protection sleeves. The newly installed shaft protection sleeve is now hard-chrome plated – which will reduce scoring and allow for a longer service life.

With this new assembly, instead of replacing the whole shaft protection sleeve, only the shaft sealing rings will need to be exchanged. For the operator, this means a significant reduction in disassembly and assembly times – and significant cost savings.

With rewelded impeller blades and a rebalancing, the modernized impeller was ready to head back to the plant and a resumption of service. Here’s to the next 20 years ...

High-performance centrifugal fan: Technical data
Manufacturer: Venti Oelde, Model HRV 50-1250/K

Volume flow:166,500 Bm³/h
Overall pressure difference:11,488 Pa
Drive power:710 kW
Impeller diameter:2,103 mm
Handled medium:Filtered inert gas

Modular wear protection for fan impellers – highly efficient and cost-effective

Abrasive media are abrading the impellers of your centrifugal fans – with every rotation they make. Day by day, week by week. It’s crucial, therefore, that the impellers are equipped with proper wear protection. But these protective parts are also subject to punishing levels of exposure and need to be regularly checked and maintained.

To make changing such wear protection parts as simple and economical as possible, Venti Oelde is now supplementing its existing protection solutions with modular elements for areas that are particularly susceptible to wear. This makes it possible to replace wear protection materials on a targeted basis – only replacing those modules where it is required based on the degree of wear. This saves costs as well as space for the storage of spare parts modules.

Venti Oelde offers modular wear protection elements for:

    (1) Wrap-around edge protection liners for blade inlet edges
    (2) Wear plates on blade inlet edge
    (3) Wear plates for impeller shroud protection
    (4) Wear plates for the blades
    (5) Wear strips for the impeller centreplate

Fresh air giants

It's a shape and size that always makes you look twice – even our staff in final assembly never fail to be impressed. The impeller has a diameter of 4,800 mm, the flanged shaft a length of 11,300 mm, and each unit has an overall weight of just under 45 tons. Venti recently delivered two of these imposing rotors to keep fresh air circulating into a mine.

But it's not only the size that's special. The rotors' outstanding rotational characteristics as well as their balance quality (Q2.5) make for low-vibration, long-life operation.

And even with rotors in these immense dimensions, our profiled blades are providing better flow guidance, higher efficiencies and thus lower energy costs to our customers.

Ralf Dörner, Managing Director, retired after 50 years at Venti Oelde

After working for more than 50 years at Ventilatorenfabrik Oelde, Ralf Dörner has left to enjoy his well-earned retirement. During the company Christmas party he thanked the staff for their teamwork and wished the company continued success.

On conclusion of his apprenticeship as an industrial manager, Ralf Dörner took over a vacant position in the commercial administration division. As a result of his organizational talent and the inclusion of technical resources, he soon introduced decisive improvements in the transparency of the accounts department. Subsequently, he was given the job of assuring total data management integration within the company. In 1982 he was granted power of attorney and appointed Commercial Manager of the company.

At the beginning of 2000, during difficult times for the company, Ralf Dörner was created Managing Director. By ensuring consistent cost management, coupled with strict parameters for marketing and construction, he led the company out of the crisis, thus gaining the trust of both staff and partners. During his time as Managing Director, the company continued to expand and is considered by customers and suppliers to be a reliable partner.

At the end of 2019 Ralf Dörner handed over the Commercial Managing Director baton to his successor, Dr. Nabil Abou Lebdi. Dr. Nabil Abou Lebdi has been working for Venti Oelde for a year and a half and now manages the company together with the Technical Managing Director, Thomas Gandt.

Modern fan technology reduces the operating costs of fertilizer plants

The production of fertilizers is not only complex, but also energy-intensive. It is a matter of interest, therefore, that energy savings of sometimes more than 25 % can be achieved with high-efficiency centrifugal fans and their auxiliary equipment which are required for the manufacture of fertilizers, that is, when using components of which many people believed that their technological possibilities had long been exhausted.

Turnkey project for the replacement of two kiln exhaust gas fans at Cemex in the Czech Republic

Venti Oelde and their agency, DSD Dostál a.s., responsible for the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic, have, working as a team, replaced two kiln exhaust gas fans at Cemex Cement a.s. in Prachovice. Venti Oelde designed and manufactured the new fans. DSD Dostál coordinated all the work, did the calculations for the relevant modifications to the inlet and outlet ducting, then manufactured and installed the ducting, ready for use.

The fans are two double-inlet pre-heater fans, each handling 398,000 m³/h hot, dust-laden gas.

The task was to replace the existing, out-of-date fans with new high-performance machines. The time-frame did not permit modifications to the existing foundations. The inlet and outlet ducts were adapted to the existing ducting system. Removal of the old fans and installation of the new fans and their relevant ducting was included in the scope of performance. Duct insulation was modernized.

Both fans were installed on schedule. Energy consumption of the fans has been clearly reduced, by 16 % for each tonne of clinker produced.

Cemex Cement in Prachovice thanked DSD Dostál and Venti Oelde for their professional work.

Venti employee anniversaries are celebrated

The management of Ventilatorenfabrik Oelde recently congratulated 49 employees, during a ceremony in the Bürgerhaus, on their many years of service and thanked them for their long-standing bond with the company. Six employees were looking back on 45 years of service and three employees on 40 years. Twenty-seven employees were celebrating their silver anniversary, while thirteen were being honoured for 10 years of service. Ralf Dörner, Managing Director of Venti Oelde, emphasized in his address that the majority of employees enjoyed their work in the company and that employee turnover was low. The way people interact has a large part to play in this. Long-standing staff members, in particular, are needed to pass on their knowledge to newcomers and to help them to feel at home in the Venti Team.

New High-Efficiency Rotor for Cement Works Saves 23 % Energy

Energy efficiency is considered to be of primary importance in the cement industry – in both large cement groups as well as in smaller independent cement works. Process fans, in particular, which are among the machines with a high energy demand, represent a large savings potential.

Venti Oelde has succeeded in reducing the energy costs of a centrifugal fan, in operation for many years, by almost a quarter. The investment easily paid for itself after 7200 hours of operation, that is, within 14 months.

Clean the air discharged by car shredders

Car shredder plants crush up to 300 tonnes of scrap an hour – vehicles as well as mixed scrap and white goods. Depending on the material, volatile hydrocarbons (Volatile Organic Compounds VOCs) are released in the exhaust air. VOCR, a new system for car shredders developed by Venti Oelde, reduces environmentally damaging hydrocarbon compounds contained in the exhaust air.

Wet scrubbers are usually used for the required cleaning of and reduction of pollutants in the exhaust air. These are, however, limited in their ability to remove the harmful hydrocarbons. Venti Oelde now offers, with its VOCR system (Venti Oelde Carbon Reduction), an alternative which is both effective and economical, as an upgrade or new installation.

Rewarding Participation in ICE Europe 2015

With the motto "100 % more Power", Venti Oelde attended ICE Europe 2015, already the 9th edition of this exhibition, and presented a variety of solutions and innovations for the printing, paper and foil and film industry.

ICE Europe is the world’s leading exhibition for the converting industry, which has been expanding for many years. There is a correspondingly high need for finishing and processing new materials and for energy-efficient production.

Venti Oelde has been regarded as an expert in this field for decades. When the subject of "energy-efficient production" came up during ICE Europe, the air handling specialist was able to positively surprise a lot of people with its patented Guiding Edge Nozzle (GENo).

The attractive exhibition stand of the specialist from Oelde was, therefore, always well visited, reflecting the overall achievements of the exhibition. There was not only satisfaction in the number of contacts made, but also in the excellent quality of the discussions.

For Venti Oelde ICE Europe 2015 can be considered to have been a complete success. As well as introducing new technologies, there were also interesting discussions on the subject of OEM business. Here Venti Oelde offers the whole spectrum of technological possibilities, starting with research and development, continuing through to the delivery of complete modules.

Health Day "Nutrition, Hygiene and Skin Protection" at Venti Oelde

The main subjects of the "Health Day" held in May at Venti Oelde were nutrition, hygiene and skin protection.

During her talk on "Hygiene", Dr Ruth Welslau from the team of doctors responsible for occupational health in local factories, explained how to clean the skin correctly, the use of work gloves and work-wear and hygiene during meals.

Describing the "5 A DAY" programme (5 portions of a variety of fruit or vegetables each of which will fit in the palm of a hand), Petra Rieping from the AOK health insurance company emphasized that fruit and vegetables are extremely important in helping us stay healthy and that with a balanced diet a healthy weight can be achieved and maintained. Regular exercise will reduce fat deposits and build up muscle mass.

There were information stands where employees were given information about the correct way to protect their skin and where skin moisture was measured. Body fat analyses and determination of the body mass index provided information about one’s personal condition.

Venti supported the health day with healthy finger food and delicious juice mixed drinks for their employees.

Managing director, Ralf Dörner, commented: We want to encourage our employees to eat sensibly and to treat their skin with respect, as well as show them how they can maintain their health and protect themselves against hazardous substances by simple hygiene precautions.

Venti Oelde continues to grow

Venti Oelde ended the business year 2013 on a high. The total turnover of almost 60 million Euros represented an increase of around 10 % on the previous year. With an export rate of 83 %, the order volume at the end of the year amounted to 42 million Euros. The high quality standard is a persuasive argument for customers around the world to make a decision in favour of Venti products.

Venti Oelde is currently working on a large order of over 6 million Euros, received from one of the largest South Korean plant builders, to supply fans for an ammonia plant in Northwest Saudi Arabia.

Despite the large number of international competitors interested in this contract, Venti Oelde was successful in convincing the clients of the service capability, excellent quality and the long-term availability of fans "Made in Oelde".

The scope of supply includes special fans as well as comprehensive accessories, such as steam turbines to drive the fans.

Each of the ordered fans supplies a flow volume of almost 1 million cubic meters an hour and requires a driving power of up to 3,300 kW. They weigh 45 tonnes and are up to 8 meters high.

The plant is planned to go into service in 2016 and will annually produce about 1.1 million tonnes of ammonia. Ammonia serves as a raw material in the manufacture of chemical fertilizers and is won from natural gas.

Venti produces the core components exclusively in its main plant in Oelde, founded in 1930.

Huge Savings for the Cement Industry

Venti Oelde predicts longer useful lives and reduced time and effort for maintenance with their wear protection for process fans. Now the company is promising optimized systems.

In the Federal Republic of Germany alone wear annually causes damage amounting to billions of Euros. Process fans in the cement and non-metallic mineral processing industries are exposed to extremely tough conditions and, therefore, to massive wear.

Together with a reputable German technical university Venti Oelde has now meticulously examined wear on industrial fans.

Venti Oelde now Blue Competence Partner

Blue Competence, an initiative of the VDMA (German Engineering Federation), stands for the development of sustainable technical solutions by the mechanical engineering industry for all industrial applications. The participating partners commit themselves to offering solutions in line with market trends, which use energy and resources more efficiently, are environmentally friendly and which improve the quality of life.

Blue Competence defines for this purpose resilient sustainability criteria and standards which are to be achieved by each member. Blue Competence thus provides for more transparency, makes it easier to get one’s bearings and gives confidence to all those who are searching for sustainable solutions and products or companies which act in a sustainable manner.

For example, fans handling gases and material have been continuously improved in their performance, flexibility and, in particular, in their energy consumption. With upgraded aerodynamics and intelligent drive systems efficient fans all over Europe annually save 43,000,000 kWh. Further progress in design provides the possibility of future efficiency levels of > 85 %.

Venti Oelde has, therefore, for many years been consistently active in the research and development of fans with improved efficiency levels and was able to tellingly demonstrate their know-how in many customer projects. The same applies to the optimisation of plant pressure losses which Venti Oelde visualises by means of flow simulations.

However, for Venti Oelde energy efficiency and sustainability do not just apply to new business. Upgrading fan impellers in process fans through professional maintenance and repairs leads to a clear reduction in the operating costs of existing plants.

New Performance Testing Facility for Large Centrifugal Fans

Ventilatorenfabrik Oelde GmbH (Venti Oelde) has built a new performance testing facility for centrifugal fans, both heavy-duty and special construction, in a record time of only three months.

Until now, Venti Oelde tested the aerodynamic and mechanical properties of fans under laboratory conditions and with elaborate individual measurements. The facilities and the locality also permitted measurements only on fans of a limited size. Now testing is carried out under operating conditions. Venti Oelde can now also perform a verification of the performance of large and special fans before their despatch. Customers, therefore, receive the desired proof of the aerodynamic data and running properties before commissioning.

Large Cement Lines: just one Process Fan is enough

As a component of large cement lines with high flow volumes, the single powerful centrifugal fan offers numerous technical and economic advantages in comparison with two parallel operating fans. In cooperation with Venti Oelde, planners and plant constructors can depend on one large fan, even if the flow volume is higher than 1,000,000 m³/h.

For several years now larger and larger cement lines are being commissioned. Kiln lines with a capacity of more than 10,000 tonnes per day are no longer a rarity. Plant components must, therefore, be correspondingly dimensioned. Typical examples of these components are raw mill and cement mill fans, kiln fans for pre-heaters or filter fans, for example for the cooler exhaust air from large filters.

Computational Fluid Dynamics for fans and plants

In the field of turbomachinery construction, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has, within the space of just a few years, become an indispensable tool for the optimization and new design of turbomachines, as well as for the elimination of fluid-mechanic problems in installed systems. With this method, it is possible to make far more precise statements regarding the behaviour of a technical or natural flow than could be made on the basis of classical partly-empirical, test-based approaches. In the journal, ZKG International issues No. 5 + 6/2011, Venti Oelde uses process fans to show the basic principles as well as practical examples of CFD simulations.

Launch of a microsite in Bauverlag' s website

With their own microsite integrated into Bauverlag 's primary website, Ventilatorenfabrik Oelde wishes to introduce users to a trade-specific cross section of their products and services.

As one of the leading suppliers of large and special fans for the cement, lime and gypsum industry it is a logical consequence for Venti Oelde to wish to further deepen their communication with the technical groups of each branch. This is possible through the provision of specialist information in cooperation with the Bauverlag. The new microsite, dealing with the subject of „Process Fans“ can be found from 1st March 2011 in the online version of the trade journal „ZKG International“. Venti Oelde will present their large and special fans for the complete industrial process, from pyroprocessing and cooling through grinding and separating to dedusting, whereby the fans mainly work under arduous conditions.

As a start, the online information will be added to and actualized by degrees over the next year with specialized editorials which are already being planned.

This is the way to our special topics: www.zkg.de/fans

Tandem Drive for Centrifugal Fans ensures high availability

Venti Oelde ensures high levels of availability of centrifugal fans in large plants with a tandem drive.

For new-build projects of large chemical plants Venti Oelde offers centrifugal fans with a so-called tandem drive. This necessitates a relatively low investment and reliably prevents downtime which can cause production losses amounting to several hundred thousand Euros daily.

Tandem drive with automatic drive change-over

The tandem drive consists of two drives: a medium or high voltage motor to start up and a steam driven turbine for continuous operation. As soon as sufficient steam is available the plant automatically switches over to the steam turbine. For the reverse, technically sophisticated action from steam turbine drive to the electric motor Venti Oelde uses a special coupling configuration which limits the torque peaks to a defined, maximum permissible torque.

Safety right down the line

Venti Oelde meets all design regulations for centrifugal fans and their individual components. The tandem drive has for many years proved itself to be successful on a daily basis in large plants all over the world. Furthermore, test runs and simulations substantiate that specific designs meet customer requirements. A further plus, maintenance work can be carried out on the inactive drive while the plant is in operation.

More room for innovations

Ventilatorenfabrik Oelde GmbH based in Oelde (Münsterland) handed over a new office complex to its employees after a construction time of seven months.

After increased investments into their production facilities – besides modernising the machinery, the production buildings were enlarged as well – this extension to the offices is the final stage of a comprehensive investment package.

Venti Oelde invested a total of 1.7 Mio € in the new office space, thus extending the existing area by about one third. Light-flooded rooms create a bright and pleasant atmosphere, offering a modern working environment for innovative minds.

The extension also includes a large conference and presentation centre equipped with the latest presentation equipment. Whether used for internal meetings or for customer presentations – these new rooms offer modern and stylish surroundings.
